{"id":585,"date":"2018-06-11T22:25:19","date_gmt":"2018-06-11T22:25:19","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/newarkspeaks.com\/?p=585"},"modified":"2018-07-07T17:37:28","modified_gmt":"2018-07-07T17:37:28","slug":"rpa-report-calls-for-newark-airport-overhaul","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/newarkspeaks.com\/index.php\/2018\/06\/11\/rpa-report-calls-for-newark-airport-overhaul\/","title":{"rendered":"RPA Report Calls For Newark Airport Overhaul"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span class=\"submitted\"><span class=\"submitted-label\">By<\/span>\u00a0<span class=\"name\">Ang Santos<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>The Regional Plan Association (RPA) proposes a thirty to forty year long, $50 billion overhaul of Newark Airport.\u00a0\u00a0The plan includes a third runway and a transportation hub connecting PATH train service.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s critical that we look at a third runway,\u201d said Rich Barone, Vice President for Transportation, Regional Plan Association.\u00a0\u00a0\u201cBut to get to a third runway we would have to actually move a lot of things around at the airport in order to make it fit and to make it work.\u00a0\u00a0To get the greatest amount of capacity.\u00a0\u00a0We anticipate with a third runway we could increase capacity by up to forty-four percent which is substantial.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>City Councilman John Sharpe James says the plan would create walking access to Newark Airport.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCurrently we have a planned PATH train extension, a new station at the airport.\u00a0\u00a0This project before you would bring the airport closer to that station to allow more community access.\u00a0\u00a0Right now, from the street you cannot walk to Newark Airport.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>RPA President Tom Wright believes the Port Authority can find the resources to self-sufficiently pay for the project.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s about the Port Authority making its seaports profitable the way they are in other parts of the world.\u00a0\u00a0How potentially to capture some of the value of the PATH system itself and use that to pay for operations in the PATH system.\u00a0\u00a0All of which would free up funding in capacity at the Port Authority to make these kinds of investments,\u201d said Wright.<\/p>\n<p>Mayor Ras Baraka backs the report and plan.\u00a0\u00a0He says state and federal government have underfunded transportation infrastructure.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s a mistake because it underutilizes the capacity of the transportations infrastructure that we have in this community.\u00a0\u00a0If they invested more into the airport we would be able to see what is being presented to us today and would have an awesome impact not only on the regional economy but in Newark specifically.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The plan would need support from the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>By\u00a0Ang Santos The Regional Plan Association (RPA) proposes a thirty to forty year long, $50 billion overhaul of Newark Airport.\u00a0\u00a0The plan includes a third runway and a transportation hub connecting PATH train service. \u201cIt\u2019s critical that we look at a third runway,\u201d said Rich Barone, Vice President for Transportation, Regional Plan Association.\u00a0\u00a0\u201cBut to get to [&hellip;]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":2,"featured_media":586,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"tdm_status":"","tdm_grid_status":""},"categories":[13,2,19],"tags":[],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v20.1 -
