{"id":656,"date":"2018-06-14T20:36:12","date_gmt":"2018-06-14T20:36:12","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/newarkspeaks.com\/?p=656"},"modified":"2019-09-09T09:31:57","modified_gmt":"2019-09-09T09:31:57","slug":"clean-sweep-for-team-baraka-with-mciver-mccallum-and-amador-runoff-win","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/newarkspeaks.com\/index.php\/2018\/06\/14\/clean-sweep-for-team-baraka-with-mciver-mccallum-and-amador-runoff-win\/","title":{"rendered":"CLEAN SWEEP FOR TEAM BARAKA WITH McIVER, McCALLUM AND AMADOR RUNOFF WIN"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-672\" src=\"https:\/\/newarkspeaks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/TEAM-BARAKA-RUNOFF-PIC-e1529192184851.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"1550\" height=\"842\" \/><\/p>\n<p>By Karen Yi<\/p>\n<p>Two incumbent Newark City Council members and a newcomer &#8212; who all ran\u00a0with the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.nj.com\/essex\/index.ssf\/2018\/05\/newark_election_results_2018_newark_mayor_ras_bara.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">support of Mayor Ras Baraka<\/a> &#8212; won their respective races in Tuesday&#8217;s runoff elections, and will serve four-year terms overseeing the state&#8217;s largest city.<\/p>\n<p>In the\u00a0most contentious\u00a0fight, in the East Ward, longtime Councilman Augusto Amador inched out his opponent, Anthony Campos, a former police director for the city,\u00a0according to a spokesperson\u00a0for Team Baraka.<\/p>\n<p>Amador earned 51 percent of the vote (or 1,824 votes), <a href=\"http:\/\/results.enr.clarityelections.com\/NJ\/Essex\/75962\/Web02.203317\/#\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">preliminary results show<\/a>, with 96 percent of precincts reporting.<\/p>\n<p>The two top vote getters in three council races, who did not earn more than 50 percent of the vote in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nj.com\/essex\/index.ssf\/2018\/05\/newark_election_results_2018_newark_mayor_ras_bara.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">May&#8217;s elections<\/a>, moved on to Tuesday&#8217;s runoffs.<\/p>\n<p>In the East Ward, the\u00a0runoff pitted two members of the Portuguese community against one another in an area of the city dealing with its share of growth and fears of gentrification.<\/p>\n<p>Calls to Amador and Campos Tuesday night were not immediately returned.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"photo-24593319\" class=\"image image--full\">\n<div class=\"image__wrapper\">\n<div class=\"image__wrapper\"><a class=\"image__link\" href=\"http:\/\/media.nj.com\/essex_impact\/photo\/2018\/06\/12\/Central%20Ward%20(1).jpg\"><img class=\"image__content\" src=\"https:\/\/image.nj.com\/home\/njo-media\/width600\/img\/essex_impact\/photo\/2018\/06\/12\/Central%20Ward%20(1).jpg\" sizes=\"(min-width: 980px) 600px,(min-width: 600px) 91vw,100vw\" srcset=\"https:\/\/image.nj.com\/home\/njo-media\/width328\/img\/essex_impact\/photo\/2018\/06\/12\/Central%20Ward%20(1).jpg 328w,https:\/\/image.nj.com\/home\/njo-media\/width480\/img\/essex_impact\/photo\/2018\/06\/12\/Central%20Ward%20(1).jpg 480w,https:\/\/image.nj.com\/home\/njo-media\/width600\/img\/essex_impact\/photo\/2018\/06\/12\/Central%20Ward%20(1).jpg 600w,https:\/\/image.nj.com\/home\/njo-media\/width960\/img\/essex_impact\/photo\/2018\/06\/12\/Central%20Ward%20(1).jpg 960w\" alt=\"\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n<\/div><figcaption class=\"image__caption\">LaMonica McIver (right) and Shawn McCray (left) sought the Central Ward Council seat vacated by Gayle Chaneyfield Jenkins, who ran for mayor and lost. McIver claimed victory on Tuesday.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>A new councilwoman will take the reins of Newark&#8217;s Central Ward, overseeing the hub of growth and development in the city&#8217;s downtown.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.lamonicamciver.com\/about-lamonica-mciver\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">LaMonica McIver<\/a>, who ran on Mayor Ras Baraka&#8217;s slate and is his former student,\u00a0was victorious in Tuesday&#8217;s runoff elections against her opponent Shawn McCray.<\/p>\n<p>Preliminary results from the Essex County Clerk&#8217;s Office show McIver earned 56 percent of the 2,802 votes cast, with all precincts reporting.<\/p>\n<p>McIver is\u00a0the personnel director for Montclair Public Schools and a trustee of the &#8220;Believe in Newark&#8221; Foundation.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I&#8217;m feeling amazing,&#8221; McIver told NJ Advance Media Tuesday night. &#8220;It was a humbling campaign; a humbling experience.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;In the\u00a0Central\u00a0Ward they were looking for fresh face, some consistency in leadership and they were ready for something new,&#8221; she said.
