Kevin Ryan, a former Assemblyman from Nutley who served as an Essex County Undersheriff, has died.
Ryan, 49, served for nearly two decades in the Essex County Sheriff’s Office, rising to the rank of undersheriff. He also served a year beginning in January 2011 as State Assemblyman before redistricting changes.
Ryan was a close confidante of Essex County Sheriff Armando Fontoura and a friend of many Essex County elected officials.
“No matter what the situation, Kevin Ryan was someone you could always count on,” said Essex County Executive Joseph N. DiVincenzo. “He was a consummate professional who responded to every emergency, special event and meeting. More importantly, Kevin was a friend to everyone who, without fail, would offer his help and support no matter the time of day. Essex County has lost a great person and I have lost a great friend.”
“Kevin Ryan was a good friend, and I am very saddened by this sudden loss,” said State Senator Richard J. Codey. “He was dedicated to public safety officer and public servant. Essex County, as well as all of New Jersey, has lost a great man. May God be with his family, friends and colleagues at this difficult time.” said State Senator Richard J. Codey
“My heart aches,” Sen. M. Teresa Ruiz said. “We have lost a good one today.”
Newark North Ward Councilman Anibal Ramos Jr. said Ryan was not only a friend, but family.
“We lost a good man and brother,” Ramos said.
Ryan, 49, of Nutley is a graduate of Nutley High School and the Essex County Police Academy.
