Construction on the school began in March 2016 on a property that had been abandoned for decades after United Hospital closed its doors in the mid 1990s.
Painted in bright oranges, greens and purples, the state-of-the-art facility boasts of 58 academic classrooms and more than 30 career technology spaces for culinary arts, cyber security, cosmetology, green energy and others. A large construction commons will house plumbing, electrical, carpentry and HVAC programs, and allow students to practice on model homes or boats.

U.S. Sen. Robert Menendez, D-N.J., and members of the state Senate and Assembly were also in attendance, as well as Lt. Gov. Sheila Oliver.
They and students from the district packed the 800-seat auditorium.

The school also has two gymnasiums and a synthetic grass field.
The dedication ceremony was complete with an original song from students on the late Payne.
“This man was ready to fight, protest and succeed,” the students sang. “This school is named after him and all he did.”

“Donald Payne (Sr.) deserves this and 10,000 times more than this,” Newark Mayor Ras Baraka said. “We are honored to be here. We should all be proud and hopefully the young people in this school will have the opportunity to learn and understand what Donald Payne meant to people in New Jersey.”
The school will open for summer classes, and for the school year in September.
